1) Respond promptly to blot the coffee spill. By first using either white paper towels or dry cloths, be sure to blot the excess moisture immediately following the spill. It is important to begin the process by blotting the outer edges of the spill in order to prevent the mess from expanding outward, and the blot towards the center. Treat dry, old spills like a fresh spill after lightly dampening the stain with water.
2) Blend a homemade solution. By mixing together 1 tsp of liquid dish soap, 1 cup of white vinegar, and 2 cups warm water (do not use hot). To better apply the solution, a spray bottle is ideal to mix the solution, however, a bowl or bucket will suffice. Without oversaturating the area, generously mist the stain, or use a dampen cloth from the solution to begin blotting. In between applications, use a dry cloth or paper towel in order to avoid soaking the carpet.
3) Blot only. Never use scrubbing or rubbing techniques to treat the spot, only blot the spill when treating any spills, spots, or stains on carpets as by spreading it out and pushing it deeper in the carpet. During a coffee spill, in addition to it affecting the carpets, the carpet padding and subfloor can also be impacted. To get deeper, use your fingers to work the solution gently into the fibers.
4) Residual coffee stain. When the coffee only lightens as opposed to lifting out completely from the carpets, you can make a paste adding a few drops of water to baking soda at a time in some instances. Vacuum the dried remnants after you place the paste to the carpet and let it set until dries.
